But new free-to-air host Channel 10 was thrilled with a national audience of more than 1.1 million.
In Melbourne, the match was the top-rated program of the evening, with the network on Friday taking the audience was “up 420 per cent on (its) 2012-13 capital-city season average”.
Ten paid $100 million – adding $20 million in contra – for BBL rights over five years, its first foray into elite cricket coverage.
The BBL, now in its third summer, has battled for crowds in previous years before the Christmas holidays and has forced back its start date this summer by two weeks to maximise those numbers.
In the opening derby in 2012-13, the Renegades and Stars drew 23,589 to Etihad Stadium on December 7.
But in the return MCG clash on January 6, a crowd of 46,581 saw the explosion between Shane Warne and Marlon Samuels at the MCG.
